The Odyssey of Enlightenment
EDITOR'S CHOICE -- Yoga Journal
Thompson's dialogues comprise a fairly comprehensive course in Advaita
(nondualist) Vedanta, both traditional and "mystical." And the
ineffable, indestructible abiding in the Self which Vedanta proclaims as
the only true Reality (and which sages like Ramana Maharshi typified) is
precisely what Thompson seeks. In dialogue after dialogue, he grills the
teachers on how to attain it--and, even more urgently, how to maintain
it. He is so preoccupied with his search that when Poonjaji proclaims
Thompson enlightened, the devotee takes issue with him.
Midwest Book Review
This book is a selection of interviews with twelve East Indian spiritual teachers, each of whom are widely respected for their enlightened wisdom. Hindu guidance to life-long harmony, the full depth of the immortal truth within Socrates' classic phrase "Know thyself," as well as insights on the meaning of destiny and God's will round out this superbly presented anthology of spiritual acumen. Essentially a chronicle of Thompson's personal quest for spiritual meaning and eternal truths, The Odyssey of Enlightenment is a welcome and highly recommended contribution to Eastern Spirituality reference collections and Hindu Studies supplemental reading lists.

The story of the author's twenty-year spiritual journey reads like a modern odyssey. Along the way he engages in a series of commitments to renowned teachers, each of whom is depicted in a long chapter: Osho, Papaji, Ramesh S. Balsekar and D.B. Gangolli. Also interviewed is Andrew Cohen, the respected American master, who gives an account of the perils and opportunities of the path to enlightenment. Others are Dadaji, Gangaji, Harish Madhukar, Annamalai Swami, Lakshmana Swami, Kiran, and UG Krishnamurti. He provides a set of questions and answers that will surely move readers along in their own odyssey for truth.
