Author Challenges Ideas and Medical Science and Faith

It is often said that much of the power of the human mind is as yet untapped. In a new book, Richmond Hill resident Lolette Kuby explores the ability of the mind to heal the body in ways that most of us would consider unimaginable.

A native of Cleveland, Kuby moved to Richmond Hill nearly four years ago to be near her family. Back in Ohio, Kuby was a professor and writer who was very active in the political and literary scenes. A writer of literary criticism, poems, and short stories, Kuby found time to be involved in political concerns from Gary Hart's presidential campaign to anti-nuclear campaigns and founding Cleveland's branch of NOW.

The idea for Faith and the Placebo Effect began in 1982 when Kuby's life took a turn when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She spent a week thinking about her doctor's recommendation of a mastectomy but then had a revelation that "human beings have the power to cure themselves." Between 1982 and 1997, she took no medication and says that "I never felt better." Kuby waited five years before telling anyone of either her diagnosis or treatment. For 20 years, she fought cancer with virtually no help from modern medicine.

The book, she is careful to note, is not a how-to but rather an attempt to raise our consciousness about the power of the mind. In writing the book, Kuby says that she spent "two years researching, two years writing, and two years finding a publisher . . . it's been a long haul."

The book's thesis, which contradicts many of the ideas of modern medicine, "antagonizes a lot of people," she admits. Nonetheless, the fact is that Kuby is alive and well and has a tale to tell. Kuby is now getting into the grind of touring and speaking. She will be making appearances at bookstores and other venues in the next few months.

Faith and the Placebo Effect is now available from Origin Press.
